The melodies in this sonata are animated and shared diplomatically between the violins, so that both performers require full command of a kaleidoscope of virtuosic techniques.
This piece explores the relationship between two instruments of the same species. While it might lack a bass instrument and variation of harmony and colour, the sonata is very dynamic.
In the first movement the instruments slink and slither. They exchange statements and ideas – singing their own melody with contrasting shapes and ranges.
The following allegro begins in a percussive way with the appearance of pizzicato or plucked notes and dizzying physical feats.
The third slow movement uses mutes to give the sound a dream-like quality and the fourth and final movement is fast and animated requiring full concentration and virtuosic techniques from both players.
