'Navarra Op 33' for two violins is one of Sarasate's best loved works (along with his famous 'Zigeunerweisen') - perhaps because it presents an opportunity for two violinists to share the limelight.
As a successful performer from a very young age, Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) was no stranger to pleasing the crowds with virtuosic displays. And as a composer, he wrote many Spanish dances for solo violin and accompaniment to be performed as encores.
But the lively 'Navarra' requires not one but two violinists, who need to be perfectly synchronised in their dazzlingly fast passage work. At least the listener can relax and appreciate the musical fun!
