The Piano & Christopher's Classics: Darroch/DeHart Duo

From Music Alive, 5:37 pm on 24 April 2025

This Chamber Music New Zealand concert features the Darroch/DeHart Duo, and was recorded at The Piano in Ōtautahi/Christchurch in September 2024 as part of the Christopher’s Classics series.

Flutist, Hannah Darroch and percussionist, Justin DeHart are dedicated to championing both new and classic pieces for flute and percussion. They’re known as engaging and highly-skilled musicians, whose dynamic performances introduce people to the versatility and colour of their many instrumental textures.

This programme is centred around three of the most popular works of the flute and percussion repertoire: Tōru Takemitsu’s Toward the Sea, Lou Harrison’s First Concerto for Flute and Percussion, and New Zealander Gareth Farr’s Kembang Suling. These colourful masterpieces provide the versatile duo the opportunity to highlight the timbral combination of flutes (including piccolo and alto flute) and percussion (including a rosewood marimba, gongs, and drums.)

The concert also brings in the unique voices of other American composers of contemporary music as well as recently commissioned works by New Zealand composers.
