This concert takes place in the Christchurch Town Hall and features the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra conducted by Benjamin Northey.
It begins with Aotearoa composer Maria Grenfell's Stealing Tutunui - a programmatic depiction of the Maori legend about a chief, Tinirau and his pet whale, the eponymous Tutunui, who is stolen and killed by a duplicitous priest.
The CSO are joined by Ukrainian-born Australian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk - described as “easily the most compelling pianist of his generation” (Roger Woodward) - to perform Tchaikovsky’s majestic Piano Concerto No 1.
And the concert ends with Bela Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra – a masterpiece that shows off the colours of the orchestra, and the many sides of the Hungarian composer’s masterful style.
