Walter Spies made his first visit to Bali in 1925. He fell in love with the place. After several more forays, he finally quit his position in Java and settled permanently in Bali.
He chose to live not in the south and on the seashore that so attracted the rising number of tourists but in the small highland village of Ubud, a town that he was largely responsible for transforming into the centre of high culture in Bali.
