Richard Marshall, Principal Cornet of Black Dyke Band Photo: Black Dyke Band
Richard Marshall could have played the trumpet, but the trumpets aren't found in brass bands - and brass bands are Richard Marshall's joy.
Marshall took up the cornet - the trumpet's close musical cousin - aged nine.
He dreamed of playing in brass bands and now he's principal cornet in one of the best of them: Bradford's Black Dyke Band.
This month, Marshall is sharing his love of brass music with one New Zealand's best bands, Addington Brass.
Marshall spoke with RNZ Concert about his love of the brass life and how he's kept it in the family, learning first from his father (who played the fugelhorn), marrying a fellow cornet player, and having two daughters, one who plays cornet, and one percussion (also in brass bands).
