3:17 pm on 21 May 2015

A royal commission into child sex abuse in Australia has demanded that immigration authorities hand over a series of documents in a move that could widen the the inquiry to include asylum seeker detention centres.

However, the commission has ruled out investigating alleged abuse on detention centres in Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

Fairfax Media reports that documents show that the commission has issued the Department of Immigration and Border Protection with formal notices to produce, as well as other requests for information.

There have been numerous reports of serious physcial and sexual abuse at Australia's detention centres on Nauru and in PNG, but the commission has ruled out investigating them because they are outside the jurisdiction of Australia.
