Meteorologists have said it was not unusual for snow to fall in tropical Hawaii, but rarely has it fallen so heavily at such low altitudes.
The snow was heaviest around two of the island's highest peaks - Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa - and more falls were forecast for today.
The winter storm snowfall was expected to keep the access road to the two peaks closed until tomorrow, when ski and snowboard enthusiasts were expected to take to the slopes.
Much of the rest of Hawaii is being hit by heavy rainfall amid temperatures of around 20 degrees.
