The CNMI State Board of Education said the increasing student population, most especially in the southern area of Saipan, would require the opening of one new junior and one new senior high school.

The board said that currently Marianas High School had over 1,500 students and there was a need to de-clog what is the largest high school in the CNMI.

Meanwhile it said Hopwood Middle School, built 60 years ago, was showing its age while it also needed to be moved inland from the coast to avoid the threat of a tsunami.

The board said it has to find local funding sources since federal grants to the public school system can't be used for construction purposes.
