The leader of Fiji's SODELPA party Sitiveni Rabuka says the prime minister should clean out his own backyard before criticising other political parties.
Frank Bainimarama spent much of his speech to a provincial council on Wednesday attacking the opposition.
He said they had peddled lies and created divisions in the community.
Mr Rabuka said as a national leader, Mr Bainimarama should be visionary, conciliatory and forward-looking rather than descending into gutter politics and cheap attacks.
He said the prime minister must take full responsibility for the poor performance of his dictatorial government due to the lack of consultation with all the people of Fiji.
Mr Rabuka said he shouldn't just parrot speeches written by others but consider their effect on the political environment.
