A Fijian woman, who has been charged with circulating an image of a baby holding a glass containing an alcoholic beverage and sharing it on social media, is awaiting sentencing in a first-of-its-kind-case in the country.
Fiji police said the 26-year-old woman pleaded guilty at the Nausori Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
She was charged with one count of giving intoxicating or spirituous liquor to children contrary to section 59 of the Juveniles Act, police said.
She is alleged to have taken a photo of her 11-month-old nephew during a drinking party in a village in Tailevu province.
The woman was arrested on 25 January and released after being interviewed.
The Fiji Sun reported that Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi remanded the woman until her sentencing on Friday.
"Magistrate Vaniqi said this was the first such case she had to deal with, and because it is of public interest, it was important to familiarise herself with the charge before imposing a sentence," the newspaper reported.
