Samoa's parliament is debating a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa.

This is the second leadership challenge in as many weeks against the beleaguered leader, who heads a minority government after a split in the ruling FAST party.

Attempts by FAST and the opposition Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) to form a unified position against Fiame fell flat on Wednesday, with FAST wanting a simple change in leadership, while HRPP seeking a dissolution of parliament and a return to the polls.

Fiame sought to have Speaker Papaliʻi Liʻo Taeu Masipau drop the motion this morning, but he denied her request and allowed the motion to proceed.
