Final day losses stop Fiji's Hong Kong dream

The Fiji men's sevens rugby team suffered a heartbreaking 24-17 loss to France in the semifinals at the Kai Tak Park in Hong Kong on Sunday night.

With it, their hopes of advancing to the finals of the 5th event of the World Sevens Series died.

They were handed a second blow, defeated by Australia in the third and fourth-place play-off, losing 22-21.

On the other end of the competition, the Fijiana women's side managed a 19-7 win over USA, finishing fifth at the event, with both teams heading to Singapore for the final series event.

At the end of the three-day event, the top teams were Argentina and New Zealand, who respectively won the titles in the men's and women's competition.

New Zealand overcame Australia 26-19 in a drama-filled women's final, while Canada, who defeated Fiji in the quarterfinals, claimed bronze with 21-17 win over France

Argentina finished off their unbeaten run at the event, which included defeating Fiji in pool play, and claimed their first title in Hong Kong, beating France 12-7.

All teams now head to Singapore for the final round with Argentina ahead on the men's points table with 88 points, Fiji in second with 76, Spain with 74 in third and South Africa in fourth with 66 points.

New Zealand leads the women's competition with 96 points, with Australia in second at 88 points.

Third at the moment is France with 66, while Canada and the USA are tied at 56.

Fiji has moved to seventh position on 38 points.

The top eight teams after the Singapore Sevens will head to the Los Angeles Sevens from 2-3 May for the series finals, with the four teams at the bottom of the table dropping to play promotion/relegation against the top four teams from the World Sevens Challenger Series.

Samoa and Tonga are both in the World Challenger Series and will be attmepting to finish in the top four.
