New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters landed in Nuku'alofa last night with a cross-party delegation on a Pacific trip to emphasise New Zealand's commitment to the region no matter who is in charge.
Peters is visiting Tonga, Hawai'i and Vanuatu as part of his weeklong trip to the region.
It is a continuation of several other Pacific trips Peters has been on since being in government.
The delegation includes Pacific Peoples Minister Shane Reti from the National Party, Labour deputy leader Carmel Sepuloni, and Green's foreign affairs spokesperson Teanau Tuiono.
Peters said the Pacific is in the middle of a challenging geostrategic environment, and it is important to regularly spend time in the region to ensure mutually-beneficial cooperation.
He said New Zealand is committed to doing its part to help.
"New Zealand's commitment to the Pacific is long-term and endures through successive governments and across the political spectrum," he said ahead of the trip.
"That's why we are visiting the region with a senior delegation from across our Parliament to listen to our partners and learn more about the Pacific's priorities."
