Tonga Rugby League (TRL) is interested in hosting a Pacific Cup clash in Nuku'alofa in the future.
TRLP president Lord Fakafanua told RNZ Pacific that it is something they are working on.
"A home game would be amazing if it happens," he said in response to queries sent to his office.
TRL Board member Viliami Takau said they have held discussions on the issue, with a set of requirements given to TRL to work on.
"Yes, we have, and just working on the requirements," he said.
"We started talking about it after the competition last year and raised it with the Australian delegation that came over last month.
"Hopefully, we are able to tick all the boxes."
The Test match could be against either the New Zealand Kiwis or the Australian Kangaroos.

However, one of the biggest hurdles will be the readiness of Te'ufaiva Park to host the match, if talks do get serious.
Te'ufaiva Park was not able to host the Super Rugby Pacific match-up between Moana Pasifika and the Chiefs in March this year because of the non-availability of floodlights needed for evening matches.
Another requirement would be the availability of medical services, as this is a top priority for hosting international matches to ensure sports injuries can be properly manage.
Tonga is set to meet Samoa and New Zealand in the Pacific Cup series held over the October/November.
AAP reported in April that the Tongans were proposing the home match this year be played against New Zealand.
The report said Tonga prefers to have their clash against Samoa at the CommBank Stadium in Parramatta, which would attract a sell-out crowd.
Samoa did not compete in last year's Pacific Cup, opting instead to tour England.
Tonga won a tightly contested clash against the Kiwis at Mount Smart Stadium after having lost their opening game to the Kangaroos in Brisbane.
The win in Auckland set them up for a return clash against Australia in the final, where the team lost by four points in front of a sell-out crowd in Sydney.
