A rare case of conjoined twins was delivered at Braun Memorial Hospital in Finschhafen, a town in Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea, two days ago.

Despite limited resources at the rural hospital, staff managed to stabilise the newborn boys until a medevac team from Manolos Aviation arrived to transfer them to Lae.

Their mother, Fatima Kevin from Finschhafen, said doctors had detected two heartbeats during her pregnancy. However, it was only during the operation that the medical team discovered the babies were conjoined.

Braun is a Lutheran church-run hospital that - like many rural hospitals in PNG - has struggled with funding over the years, yet its staff continues to provide critical care for the surrounding rural population.

Both the mother and her sons are now receiving specialised medical care at Angau Memorial Hospital in Lae.

Medical staff say the twins may need to be sent overseas for possible separation surgery, depending on further assessments.
