The Guardian describes Steve Gunn as “the hipster-friendly guitar slinger of the moment". Ahead of his first visit to NZ, Trevor Reekie talks to him about playing with Kurt Vile, and the American Primitive Guitar scene.

Gunn is well grounded in many guitar styles that can be traced back to the American Primitive guitar scene, including John Fahey and Sandy Bull and 1960s English folk-blues.
The New York-based guitarist has recorded and played with British musicians like Mike Cooper and Michael Chapman, who are also close friends, is equally conversant with the American indie scene, having played and recorded with Kurt Vile and The Violators.
Gunn has already assembled a healthy back catalogue of releases with his most recent album Eyes On the Lines out on the Matador label.
Despite positive reviews in the UK press and a growing reputation in Europe, Gunn says music isn't yet covering all of his bills.
"But I’ve created this thing for myself and I’m going to continue going regardless.”
