Why the US wants to crack down on your social media

From Afternoons, 1:15 pm on 11 December 2025

The process to get into the United States could be changing.

Visitors from New Zealand, and other countries like Australia and Europe, have to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation or ESTA ...currently that asks for your contact details and emergency contacts.

But soon it could also ask for your social media accounts.

The US Customs and Border Protection proposal could require visitors to provide up to five years of social media history, plus email addresses used in the past 10 years, IP addresses and biometrics, including facial, fingerprint, DNA and iris data.

So what does this mean for Kiwi travellers?  Should we wipe our phones? Get a burner? Think twice before liking an anti-Trump meme?
