Seven Countdown supermarkets close as staff isolate

From Checkpoint, 5:27 pm on 23 August 2021

Seven Auckland Countdown supermarkets have been forced to close - mostly due to staff shortages.

That's because a thousand company employees in Auckland and Wellington are isolating because their store is a location of interest, or they have family connected to a location of interest.

Some employees are also facing childcare issues or are vulnerable to Covid-19.

So, with their local shut, many Aucklanders have been forced to find alternative ways to feed the family.

Along with the temporary closures of its Manurewa and Takanini stores, which were identified as places interest today, Countdown has also shut its Birkenhead, Albert Street, Hauraki Corner, Mangere Mall and Halsey Street sites because of staffing numbers.

Checkpoint reporter Nick Truebridge and cameraman Nick Monro have the details.
