Calls for corrections minister to increase prisoners pay

Prison reform advocates are calling for the Corrections minister to increase prisoners pay, labelling the current pay rates of 20 to 60 cents an hour practically slave labour. Pay rates have remained the same for 20 years and in 2022, a high court judge found that the minister for Corrections had failed to do their duty by not setting new pay rates. Since then, the Corrections minister has approved new rates under the Corrections act but didn't increase them at all, and critics say at their current level they're not fit for purpose.
