New Zealand dancer, choreographer and filmmaker Loughlan Prior has been named one of '25 to Watch' in 2025 in the prestigious US publication Dance Magazine. The magazine has been running since 1927, and this is the 25th year its published a list of 25 artists on the verge of a breakout year. Born in Australia, Loughlan moved to New Zealand graduating from the New Zealand School of Dance. He has since presented both nationally and internationlly with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
His work has taken him all over the world including Germany, Canada and the US. He's known for his modern spins on classic tales and he's passionate about making sure queer youth in a contemporary Aotearoa is represented in his work. Loughlan Prior spoke to Culture 101.
