Show Me Shorts Film Festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary. It's become Aotearoa's leading international short film festival and this month there will be more than 80 films, 100 screenings across 40 venues this month. The festival also provides professional development opportunities for aspiring short filmmakers through various events during the year.
One of the films screening this year is When The Geese Flew by Kiwi director, Arthur Gay. The film has been nominated for Best New Zealand film, Best Director and Best Screenplay. It centres around a young teenager, Cyrus, who lives in Twizel and is grappling with the idea of his eldest sister leaving for the big city. He channels his emotions into trying to retrieve her stolen dirt bike from local kids, in a bid to stop her from leaving home. The film shows off the beautiful vast and mountainous landscape of Twizel in the South Island.
Culture 101 speaks to filmmaker Arthur Gay who's now based in Brooklyn in New York pursuing a career of writing and directing.
