This year's Arts Laureates have been announced with eight new artists being honoured and recognised for their exceptional work and their contribution to Aotearoa's cultural landscape and communities.

A big celebration took place at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre in Auckland on Friday night with the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi also marking 25 years.

The eight new laureates join 137 alumnae in demonstrating commitment to their craft and excellence and take home a $50,000 no strings attached reward as a nudge and encouragement to keep creating.

Filmmaker Roseanne Liang has received the Gaylene Preston Filmmaker Award.

Roseanne has worked across film, television, web series, including her debut feature, My Wedding and Other Secrets, Creamerie, Shadow in the Cloud, Avatar and more recently, Apple TV’s  Murder Bot.

The foundation says Roseanne's fearless storytelling has placed kick-ass women at the centre of cinema - while championing equity and Asian voices on screen.
