Matinee Idle for Monday 22 October 2012
12:12 to 5pm, Labour Day afternoon
Phil and Simon present an idiosyncratic afternoon of music and entertainment, including:
3:06 pm Music and the Labour Movement
What is May Day in many other countries is Labour Day in New Zealand. Music has been an essential morale booster for the international workers’ movement. From the early twentieth century, there’s been a rich crop of worker music, mostly stemming from the United States, but widely circulated and translated. A few of the songs became great hits, without the wider public fully grasping the intention of the lyrics. Music and the Labour Movement looks at the music of Joe Hill, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and come closer to home with a Bill Taylor song ‘151 Days’ about the 1951 Waterfront Dispute.
