The government has just released the country's first National Adaptation Plan -- and it's focused on getting communities talking about how climate change will affect them and what they should do to prepare.
For some along vulnerable coastlines, that will range from building protective seawalls, raising floor levels, to managed retreats.
The plan also prompts discussion about who should pay for all of this, and how our laws need to change in order to make any of this possible.
The Climate Change Minister James Shaw spoke to Māni Dunlop.
