Fiji has escaped a direct hit by tropical cyclone Gita. The southern island group of Ono-i-Lau and Vatoa - about halfway between Tonga and Fiji - were the closest to the category 4 storm, as it moved west. The extent of any damage to those outer islands isn't clear yet, as communications were lost. Hannah Butler is a New Zealander working for the Red Cross at its Pacific regional headquarters in Suva.
