The Justice Minister, Andrew Little, says judges must not be put in the position where they make bail decisions that leave people dead. The Chief District Court judge says the inquest into the death of Auckland teenager, Christie Marceau, has highlighted the risk created by gaps in information available to judges in bail hearings. Akshay Chand had been bailed on charges of kidnapping and threatening to rape Ms Marceau when he killed her in 2011. Coroner Katharine Greig's findings were published yesterday. She recommends better information sharing between the courts, the police and the health system. Christie's mother, Tracey Marceau, says the system has to be fixed. Justice Minister Andrew Little says the coroner's recommendations must be complied with in full.
