The drowned valleys of the Marlborough Sounds drowned a little more in the Kaikoura earthquake.
GPS monitoring shows some parts of the sounds dropped by up to three centimetres in the 2016 quake. That fits with what locals have already been noticing - they're seeing spring tides that are slightly higher, and wharves and jetties now lower in the sea.
