Residents in the Northland settlement of Kaimaumau have evacuated as firefighters battle a massive scrub fire that has grown to 600 hectares.
A nearby school and marae opened their doors late last night for evacuees.
Far North mayor John Carter was at the school evacuation centre at Waiharara.
