New Zealand now has the power to impose significantly harsher sanctions on Russia with a new law passed under urgency late on Wednesday night.
It took just five hours for the Russia Sanctions Bill to go through - all political parties support it.
The new legislation focuses on punishing Putin's regime for invading Ukraine but it's also spurred debate on a more general autonomous sanctions bill.
