Researchers at Victoria University find new antibiotic

From Nine To Noon, 9:30 am on 14 April 2025

Researchers at Victoria University - Te Herenga Waka have discovered a new antibiotic using genome mining.

The team at the School of Biological Sciences analysed a bacterial genome and identified a promising  compound they have called  "ambocidin."

The new antibiotic has the potential to treat drug resistant bacteria.

One of the research team, Jeremy Owen, joins Kathryn to explain how they managed to switch-on the normally silent genes that produce ambocidin.
