Social media ban would backfire - Law Association

From Nine To Noon, 9:30 am on 23 September 2025

The Law Association is warning that banning children from social media is a quick fix destined to fail and could actually make things worse by driving kids' online activity underground.

Parliament's select committee has been hearing from submitters on the bill which is in the name of National MP Catherine Wedd.

Wedd's bill would put the onus on social media companies to verify someone is over the age of 16 before they access social media platforms, and is modelled off Australian legislation that was recently passed.

But technology experts say under-16s will find a way to circumvent any blocks put in place.

The head of the Law Association's Technology and Law Committee is Lloyd Gallagher.
