Activists fighting for support and recognition of the Maori language say while progress has been made over the last 40-years, much more is needed. Te Kupu o te Wiki started in 1975 and it's been an annual feature on the calendar ever since. The movement to get Te Reo recognised took off during the 1970s led by a group of young, enthusiastic people, but their struggle for better acceptance of Te Reo was full of challenges, and one activist was arrested.
