Volcanic activity at Whakaari/ White Island has forced flight cancellations.

Air New Zealand said four flights to Tauranga had to be cancelled on Sunday evening, due to volcanic ash from the island.

Geonet's website showed White Island was at volcanic alert level three during the evening, which it said indicates a minor eruption.

Air New Zealand said it was monitoring the situation and tracking the movement of the ash.

It asked customers planning to travel on Monday to check the company's mobile app for the latest updates on flights.

Whakaari, which lies offshore in the Bay of Plenty, is New Zealand's most active cone volcano.

In 2019, tour groups visiting the island were caught in a sudden eruption, with 22 people killed and many more badly injured. The fifth anniversary of the incident was marked in a ceremony at Whakatāne, in December.
