More than 100,000 people walked off the job.
It was the latest in a growing series of strikes and walkoffs this year, but the sheer size of it means much of New Zealand will come to a halt.

The strike by nurses will take place on 23 October, the same day as action earlier announced by primary teachers and allied health workers.
