Working age population getting older

The working age population is getting older, alongside a drop in the number of workers in their 20s.

Stats NZ estimate the number of people over 70 available to work in December rose 3.4 percent on the year earlier - by about 19,500.

The over 70s also increased their share of the estimated workforce by 2 percent, while the number in the 25 to 29 age group fell 3.6 percent.

The estimated total number of people available to work rose 1.6 percent in the year to December to just over 4.3 million.
