Ten pilot whales refloated from a Golden Bay beach Tuesday night have restranded.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) says rescuers are heading to the beach at Taupata Point, near Pakawau.

The whales originally beached early on Monday morning, with one dying on Tuesday before the remaining ten were refloated.

DOC operations manager Andrew Lamason says given the whales first stranded on Monday, concerns are mounting for their health.

But he says experts have assessed their condition and believe it's worth trying again on the next high tide at about 4pm.

He said the whales have been really well cared for by rescuers, avoiding too much skin loss.

Although it's rewarding working with so many people to try and save the whales, it's emotionally and physically difficult work, he said.
