The police said the man entered the bush yesterday afternoon with three companions, and lost touch with the group at about 5pm.
When his friends returned to their car at about 8pm, the man had not returned.
Inspector Joel Lamb said although the weather had been mild, the police were concerned about the man having to stay out overnight.
The missing man is described as Maori, in his 40s, solidly built and dressed in shorts and a T-shirt.
