A new Chinese embassy building will be built on a hectare of land in Wellington's Mt Cook.
The land, on the corner of Rugby and Tasman Streets, was previously owned by Foodstuffs, which cleared most of the buildings on the land.
The embassy would build a large compound on the site, Wellington City Council spokesperson Richard MacLean said.
External plans showed there would be a number of low rise buildings, and the lead designer was a well-known architect from Beijing.
It was not known when construction on the new embassy would start.
Mr MacLean said it was understood the current embassy was too small, hence the move.
