A car that went off a bridge and into the Whanganui River overnight following a serious crash has now been recovered.

Police say the car went off the Victoria Avenue Bridge near Anzac Parade at around 12:21am.
They also confirmed one man was found dead inside the four-wheel drive.
While it's understood he was the only person inside, police say it's unclear what led to the accident.
Inquiries into the crash are ongoing.
