State Highway 2 over the Remutaka Hill will be closed for essential maintenance work tonight.
The closure will run from 9pm Sunday night until 4am on Monday morning, according to the New Zeaalnd Transport Agency.
It will allow road crews to safely do essential maintenance and slip prevention work.
NZTA regional transport systems manager, Mark Owen, said the Remutaka Hill road is steep, narrow and winding, which makes it a challenging environment to work in.
"Having the road fully closed to traffic is critical to ensuring the safety of our road crews," he said.
"It's also better to do this work at night when there's less traffic, so we can minimise disruption to people travelling across the hill."
In the past 12 months, crews working on the road have been able to carry out many months worth of work with night closures, which has reduced stop-go disruptions at other times by 95 per cent, the agency said.
Access to the road will be available for emergency services throughout the closure.
