A helicopter that crashed in Hawke's Bay was undertaking agricultural work at the time of the crash.
The Rescue Coordination Centre said it received an alert from the Robinson 44 helicopter distress beacon at 6am.
Police said they were alerted to the crash on the eastern side of the Mahia Peninsula by a member of the public at 6.26am.
They said the crash happened on a rural property on Mahia East Coast Road.
St John said one person had been moderately injured.
The pilot was being transferred by the Hastings Rescue Helicopter to Gisborne Hospital.
Police confirmed there was a single occupant of the helicopter.
