Police are appealing for help after a violent incident in Kaikohe in which a teenager was stabbed and also run over by a vehicle.
They say the incident unfolded around 8.15pm last night, on Mangakahia Road, near Guerin Street.
Several people were reported to be fighting with weapons (not firearms) during this incident, which lasted for several minutes.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Dalzell, who is the area investigations manager for the Mid/ Far North CIB, said during the fighting a vehicle "collided with people at the scene", knocking at least two to the ground.
One of them was the teenage boy who had been stabbed.
He was taken to hospital in a serious condition, has undergone surgery and is now in a stable condition.
Police are working with the local community to determine what sparked the violence and to identify those responsible.
"It is incredibly fortunate that this violent altercation did not result in further serious injuries or worse, become a homicide investigation," Dalzell said.
He said some of those present may have recorded the incident.
An online portal has been set up for people to submit photos or video that may be helpful to the investigation. Material can be uploaded here.
