Police Minister Poto Williams is defending her track record in the job as the National Party calls for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to replace her.
National Party leader Christopher Luxon said Williams was not equipped to be police minister.
"Police officers across the country tell me there is a serious lack of leadership from Poto Williams and they simply do not have confidence in her.
"Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern should replace her immediately."
The minister was out of her depth at a time when gang activity was increasing, Luxon said.
Williams said the calls for her resignation were a matter for the prime minister.
"I have to say to Mr Luxon, it would be really great if he had a few ideas rather than just throwing away these throwaway lines."
When asked by reporters if she deserved to stay in the job, Williams said she had a "really good record".
"Record investment in police, record numbers of police, the introduction of the firearms prohibition orders - which National actually tried twice and failed at - so I think I've got a much better record than Mr Luxon has."
Ardern said she had "every confidence" in Williams.
That confidence was based on what she had delivered for police, Ardern said.
"An increase in numbers...a doubling of the organised crime unit, firearm prohibition orders, the work we're doing on criminal proceeds. This is all progress that is ultimately making our police force better prepared, albeit in a very tough environment for them."
Ardern would not say if Williams would keep the portfolio if she re-shuffled Cabinet.
