Police say a man who was shot in Palmerston North last month was killed in front of his children.
Hori Gage, 27, and his children were in a car outside an address on Croyden Avenue on 6 August when he was shot.
Detective Sergeant Dave Wilson said it was "sheer luck" that the children were not injured.
"This was a devastating situation in which a father was shot in front of his children, who were also in the car.
"It was only by sheer luck that the children were not injured in this callous and inexcusable crime."
Wilson said police had strong lines of inquiry linking the homicide to events at a bar two days earlier.
Stuff had previously reported it was linked to a gang brawl outside the Castle 789 pub.
Wilson said police were also seeking information on a white 2005 Nissan Teana which was found burnt-out on Aranui Road following the homicide.
A team of about 15 detectives were "determined" to find out what happened and hold those responsible to account, he said.
"We would like to thank the public for their assistance to date."
