Two-men were arrested on Auckland's South Western Motorway Wednesday morning after the vehicle they were in fled police twice overnight.

Police said a stolen vehicle was seen in the Mount Manganui area, but failed to stop for a police unit and they didn't pursue it.

"At around 3.44am the same vehicle was sighted on State Highway 27 near Matamata."

It fled police, and officers again didn't pursue it.

The Eagle helicopter "began monitoring the vehicle from the Bombay Hills as it entered the motorway network".

Spikes were deployed as the vehicle travelled towards Auckland.

"Eventually, just before 5.30am, it came to a stop on the motorway near the Puhinui Road offramp," police said.

They said there was some disruption to commuter traffic and thanked people for their patience.

The driver, 29, and his 17-year-old passenger were taken into custody but were yet to be charged.
