Frank Habicht, a German-born New Zealand photographer whose work "captured the spirit of London in the Sixties", has died.

His photography subjects included the Beatles, singers Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg, the Rolling Stones, actress Vanessa Redgrave, actor Christopher Lee and filmmaker Roman Polanski, according to his website.

A post on his website and an obituary posted in the New Zealand Herald said he "set sail for unknown shores" on 8 October at Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa.

He was 85.

His obituary said he was "beloved and adored 'Papa' of Florian and Sebastian, soulmate of Christine for 55 years".

Habicht was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1938, and adopted New Zealand as his home in 1981.

He moved to the Bay of Islands that year and continued to document Northland characters and cultural events.

He had a cameo in Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's 2014 mockumentary film What We Do in the Shadows and also appeared in Love Story, directed by his film-maker son Florian Habicht
