A fire that broke out at a fertiliser factory at the Ravensdown fertiliser factory in Awatoto, south Napier has been extinguished.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Blair Walklin said crews were called to a chimney fire at Ravensdown on State Highway 51 in Awatoto at 9.30am on Wednesday.

When they arrived the fire on the 50 metre high chimney was "well involved", he said.

Crews from Napier, Hastings and Taradale attended, and they used an aerial fire truck - a truck with a long ladder - to help extinguish the fire.

Crews were now working to dampen down hotspots.

No one was injured, Walklin said.

State Highway 51 remains closed.

Ravensdown said the fire was at a part of the site that is being prepared to be decommissioned.

Photos on social media show black smoke billowing out of the plant.

Ravensdown told RNZ everyone at the site was okay, and the fire was at a part of the site being readied for decommission.
