A climate protester has been taken away in handcuffs by police after parking his car on a central Wellington street.

Michael O'Hara, who said he was from Engines Off, said he would remain parked in the middle of Boulcott Street on Thursday morning until the police forced him to move.

He arrived just after 7am on Thursday.

Initially other traffic moved around his silver Toyota Clavia.

Within half an hour three police cars and four officers arrived.

They talked to O'Hara before putting him in handcuffs and into the back of a police car.

By 7.30am traffic was freeflowing.
