A convoy of dirt bike riders have been arrested after exceeding the speed limit and running red lights in Auckland on Sunday.

Counties Manukau district prevention manager, inspector Mark Chivers, said police were first made aware of the bikers in the Ōtara area at around 2.30pm.

He said the group had travelled around 70 kilometres through parts of the city.

It is illegal to ride a dirt bike on the road unless it is roadworthy and has a current warrant and registration.

Sixteen people, including two young people, were arrested for driving dangerously.

A 33-year-old man was also arrested for displaying gang insignia on a bike, while 12 bikes were seized, along with two cars and one quad bike.

Police had been following the large group driving dangerously around the Counties Manukau area yesterday afternoon, with a number of resources deployed in response, including a Police Eagle helicopter.

The group had been seen running red lights, riding on the wrong side of the road and breaking the speed limit, inspector Kerry Watson said on Sunday.

"This is not only concerning, but it's putting other road users and members of the public at extreme risk of harm."
